@jenwriter17 Uh, I had kinda left the story in your most capable hands since I was working on my story for the contest. 😛 But okay…

Write a story where you bring out the beauty of something ordinary in the middle of a very dramatic setting.

Uh, for this prompt *puts on public school student hat* we need two things for the story:

    1. A dramatic setting
    2. An ordinary object

Usually a dramatic setting involves two or more parties in conflict. For example, a courtroom, a student discipline office, a counseling session, a war (if people are shooting at each other, conflict has clearly escalated). An ordinary object is a commonplace item that we would expect to see in a typical American household, such as a paperclip, cat, newspaper, etc.

    So we could have like:

    1. A couple fighting
    2. A pencil sharpener (this seems to be the best option to me, especially telling about their conflict from the vantage point of the pencil sharpener or making their fight ABOUT the pencil sharpener or both…)

    1. A war
    2. A newspaper

    1. A student discipline hearing for a student about to get kicked out of school (for her faith – is this in China?)
    2. A paperclip

    1. The protests in Hong Kong
    2. A rock (which would be unused, since demonstrations in Hong Kong are peaceful)

And so on. It strikes me as a cliche and kinda boring writing prompt because there are a lot of easy answers to it. Yawn.

    1. A science-fiction war/fight
    2. An iPhone (totally retro, dude)

Or maybe we should put that iPhone in a middle of a high fantasy setting. Texting in the world of toothy cows. Come on, you got this. A couple fighting in a castle with a pencil sharpener. You’ll figure it out.
