The Lamplighter was definitely the story that had the strongest impression on me, and something that I have read again and again. It wasn’t just a entertaining story like the Hidden Hand, the Lamplighter talked about what a christian looks like and how they handle painful situations. It challenges me. Honestly, I do thinks it’s better than Ishmael or Self Raised, I found them encouraging but not as challenging. Ishmael is about a christian young man that pushes himself to better his station, he’s a very noble character, and does the right thing even when it is painful. He sets a good example but I personally didn’t get as much out of it as the Lamplighter. Ishmael ends with a cliffhanger of sorts, so I felt the need to get the second book. I was surprised and satisfied with the ending.
But if you thought the Hidden Hand went too far in places, you might not like these two books either. Hidden Hand was a christian novel with strong gothic novel tendencies (such as lots of dark mystery, people being trapped for years, attempted forced marriage, attempted kidnapping). Ishmael wasn’t inspired by the old gothic novel tendencies but it does have some interesting similarities. Orphan child, kidnapping, murder plots, deception, so I don’t know if you would like it. I have a fondness for it, but I haven’t read it more than once. The most I can say in it’s favor is that it involves some strong christian characters doing the hard but the right thing.
Which is why I’m always on the hunt for books more like the Lamplighter and the Hedge of Thorns. Have you ever read the Hedge of Thorns? It’s very short but powerful. Are there any books that you ever found as challenging as the Lamplighter?
Sounds like you have a cool pastor. 🙂 The Hiding Place is probably the most powerful book I have ever read, first because it’s nonfiction and second of course, because of it’s content. Aside from the Bible it is the highest book I can recommend.
Don’t worry about it, 🙂 your not the first person to wrongly guess my age and I’m sure you won’t be the last. Honestly, it made me laugh a bit, but since I didn’t post a profile picture nobody can really tell my age. Out of curiosity though, what made you guess 15 or 16 instead of say 18?
Being teachable helps one learn everything I think. Weather it’s writing, learning from the Bible, and learning in marriage. 🙂 Ah yeah, reading and studying how the experts do it is always a good way to learn. I have a hard time finding as much time as I want for that these days. What’s something you’ve read recently that you’ve learned a lot from? I read and took notes on a book called Shepherd of the Hills, where I learned a lot about character and setting descriptions. I need to find those notes again.
