I echo @quinn-ofallon . First person perspective is the one I use most often, and it’s a pet peeve of my own writing when I see that I have two or more short paragraphs beginning with the same letter, especially if it’s “I.” xD So I start with a participle, as Quinn mentioned. Or I start with a conjunction if I’m not worried about sentence structure. Or I make sure someone / something other than my narrator is leading the sentence.
Deep-diving into the narrator’s perspective helps, too, in that I feel free to use sentence fragments and cut out stuff like “I thought” or “I felt.” For example:
Something’s not right here, I thought.
Something wasn’t right here.I noticed Abby looked confused.
Abby’s forehead wrinkled.I wondered when the night would ever end.
Would this night ever end?I mentally cursed.
Well, rats.I nearly stopped breathing.
My breathing nearly stopped.I’ve always hated clowns, acrobats, and anything to do with the circus.
I’ve always hated clowns. And acrobats. Really, anything to do with the circus.
