Everyone was wearing black. Shadowy, dark clothes to match shadowy, dark moods. Rory was bouncing on her heels. She yanked at a curly red pigtail and picked at the sleeve of her favorite green sweater and glanced at the others gathered around the wooden box, a faint smile twitching at the corners of her mouth. Why the tall man wouldn’t stop talking, she didn’t know. She wished he would stop. Didn’t he know she wanted to go play in the rain? Rain was the best weather to play in. Rory would splash and jump and get soaking wet. A tear splashed from the cheek of the woman sharing her umbrella with Rory. Why couldn’t they all be happy and play in the rain with her?
