The subject of THEME reminds me of 2 anecdotes.
Isaac Asimov was once approached by a fan who explained to him what the story was all about. Asimov disagreed with the fan’s conclusions, to which the man retorted, “Just because you’re the author doesn’t mean you know what the story is about.”
Jack London would be approached by people regarding “Call of the Wild.” They all had a different opinion on what the story was about (“It’s an allegory of blah blah blah”) and he always agreed with the fan. (“You’re absolutely right!”) The truth was that they were all wrong. “It’s just a doggy story. People like doggy stories and will pay good money for ’em.”

I really enjoyed this article, Lori! I tend to like side characters more also haha. And I’m finding myself liking one of my own side characters in my book more than the main protagonist…. I think this article will help a lot. Thank you! =)

Thank you for the kind words. I know after I wrote the article, I started seeing cliches everywhere. It helped me spot them in my own writing and in everyday speech. Changing them up made a difference. Although… I’m sure my critique group was thinking, “What’s gotten into her?!?”
