A basic premise could be that the reader walks with a woman when they see two soldiers dying at the edge of a battlefield. The reader’s powers are alluded to and he appears to be a supernatural being when he can perceive the two soldier’s dying thoughts and their pasts regarding a woman they loved. The reader hesitates, then asks the woman beside him who he should approach first, and then based on her answer we could frame the story to be about guilt/blamelessness, sin/judgment, etc.
The reveal of the story is that the reader’s “powers” turn out not to be about healing but instead he is death. Partway the reveal includes the woman beside him is the ghost of the dead woman both of these men pine after.
What do you think? Does that make sense?
