@kate Wow… both your and K.M. Weiland’s articles are pretty amazing, and it certainly will take me a while to sift through my memories and see which works have impacted me in my childhood. Something that I can remember, though, that I’m sure has impacted me, is the gut-wrenching impact of death, or self-sacrifice (like the end of Of Mice and Men, although that was only a few years ago). The things that cause me the greatest, deep-seated sense of… horror, almost… they stick with me.

As for me and why I write… I think my purposes can come from all over, but for me it often comes down to an event, person, or situation that interests me and I’ll want to write a story from it. It’s come from the beauty of life, my own joy and sorrows, a scene that the first idea pricks me in the gut, an object or a trinket that excites my interest. I tend not to start with theme and character but rather a premise and some plot twists. Then, when I start writing, I’ll find my theme, which often covers the beauty of friendship and reconciliation, as well as honor and doing what’s right.

My filter generally has to do with meticulous social nuances, as well as a propensity for (often unrealistic) situations where people choose to resolve things peacefully rather than fight it out. This all comes from myself as a person, who is freaked out simply by social situations and can’t stand conflict.
