@zee Since I wrote the above blather I have circled back around to being a romance again. (Actually, I tried to delete the previous post. You weren’t supposed to see it. It was resurrected somehow. There’s a story for ya, the discussion post that wouldn’t stay dead. Zombie Post)
Saturday I drove to the town in which my story is set, hung around for a while, talked to some people, and took some pictures.
On my way home, while driving, I thought about connecting with a couple Catholics I knew in high school to get their take on what it was like growing up as a Catholic in our area, specifically on a farm.
I started to send a message to a couple of them through Facebook, but then I chickened out. I guess I did not want to advertise to them I was going to try to write 50K words next month. They already think I’m crazy.
Maybe I’ll call one of them instead. I can feel them out if I call them, without blurting right out what I’m up to.
Folks over in the NaNoWriMo forums encouraged me to make the call. Their insight (they said) could be invaluable. I probably will call at least one of them.
My characters will have lived on a farm up to maybe 7 to 10 years ago (current time). They are living in a nearby town, after college, two sisters, one year apart. I’m not sure what I need to know. Unlike many Catholic families, this family is only 3 kids, two sisters, around 25 and 26 and a little brother, about 12. It’s not a huge Catholic family, like many.
One thing I can think of is maybe the conflicts involved in getting everyone to mass when the chores may conflict with mass time.
My story looks like it will revolve around relationships, but it might not follow a strict romance genre.
5 days to go after today, then BOOM 50,000 words in a month. Luckily we gain an hour on November 1.
