“What do you call yourself?” Nithel asked.
“…nobody really.”
The youth said, and Nithel’s chest ached for him. For the stranger believed it to be true. But before Nithel could speak, the man continued.
“When I wake up from this I’ll learn my fever broke just in time for a ghoul or some other monstrosity from the Sioan Forest to devour me.” The words barely reaching Nithel’s ears. But he heard.
The pain inside Nithel grew. Nobody looked up, and his eyes were emotionless, carefully so. But he smiled again, liked a scared child. Like Elia the first time I saw her.
“That’s my optimistic scenario.”
Nithel’s eyes grew some, meeting the stranger’s, his head tilting. It always did when he didn’t completely understand, but truly desired to, very much. Nobody couldn’t be his real name, but Nithel wouldn’t press him, Nobody, though sad, would be his calling.
Nobody looked away, to the floor, muttering. “My name’s Alessio…”
Nithel smiled inside, head straightening. His heart warmed some, ‘Defender’. A good name. But Alessio didn’t know who’d named him, how sad. Jaylin had been the same.
A door in the back, Nithel hadn’t seen, swung inward, a form plunging through.
Nithel’s blood went cold, hand snapping to his side, fingers around his leather strap. But he wouldn’t have armed his weapon. The man probably hadn’t meant to scare them. Or maybe this was his home? Why had he touched his weapon? There was no reason to be afraid?
But with a look at the true stranger’s eyes, running over the people sharing the room, Nithel’s chest also turned cold. The muscles in his arms tightened, and he slid the sling from his belt. His eyes. Nithel flicked his gaze toward Allesio, worried about him, but the youth was gone.
Now the inside of his chest split. Pain slicing across his eyes. He looked back to the new male. The way he stood, so false. But his eyes… A son of Aden.
You could be wrong. “Ack.” Nithel muttered under his breath. I only hope so. But the throb in his chest… He doubted it.
