@bookcrazygirl Yes! Definitely focus on what you like. Also, talk about how parts of the story made you feel. Chances are your friend already knows she may have spelling errors, but she probably wants to know if the story ‘works’ the way it’s supposed to. I like to know if paragraphs are confusing to someone else, or if they get a really wacky mental image (my sister pointed out that ‘still-boiling’ made her think that something wasn’t bubbling as it boiled, not that it had been boiling and continued to do so…) Remember to start and end your critique with positivity–this makes the middle part not seem as terrible. 😉
