If an author does it adequately, the way a character speaks tells the reader a lot about them. From the Unabomber’s Manifesto, the FBI was able to (correctly) assume that he was from Chicago. Not only can speaking style tell you where the character is from, but also their age, health, education… Because of these factors, I don’t remember characters because of their style of voice. Rather, the style of voice seems to tell me what to remember about them.

I am definitely planning on creating characters with different ways of speaking. It’s hard to do this well but I think it’s worth it to have at least one or two unique voices in your book.

For instance, Hagrid’s voice is very easy to pick out. If I remember correctly, in the books JK Rowling would be able to say a quote from him without directly saying it was Hagrid. His voice was that recognizable. I’ve read from other authors who were able to do the same thing with a particular character. I think it brings characterization to a new level.
