You could go with dropping in the colour with an action. Like in the “scratching his hand through his black hair” example. Something like “scratching his bronze/green/cherry-red hand through his hair” would be an effective way of doing that. Or if hair isn’t an option, you can have an action like straightening an item of clothing, scratching his ear, etc.
