I think if we were to write it from the villain’s POV and focus on remorse and how (s)he has wasted and misused her/his past and now will never have the chance to set things right, that could be pretty heart-wrenching. We don’t necessarily have to go into tons of detail about what they did, just that they now realise it was wrong. I think it could work.
