I love the physically strong female characters (as long as they have personality as well)! It’s sad how much hate they get, especially from people saying girls can’t win fights against guys. I mean, the whole point of learning a martial art or using a weapon is to use something other than brute force, so it makes no sense to write off girls at being bad at them because they’re not strong enough.
There are also martial arts out there that are designed for taking on a stronger opponent. I’ve taken lessons in ju-jitsu and aikido, which are both designed to use your attacker’s strength against them. Those martial arts tend to be quite popular with girls, but also with smaller guys (because, despite what the films would have you believe, being male does not necessarily equal being over six feet tall and super strong). Sure, a girl might not be able to punch as hard as a guy, but if she can use the momentum from that punch to knock you over… 😀
I’ve written a few female characters who can fight. Most my stories involve a lot of fighting haha. I had a lot of fun in my last story writing about an elvish warrior woman who’s an expert at sword- and knife-fighting. She’s blind due to a battle injury, but she can sense other people’s positions with a magical ability, so she’s relearned to fight using that instead of her sight.
Great article, thanks!
