Zeb stepped out of the cab with his luggage and paid the driver. Before him skyscrapers shot up, gleaming in the sunlight. The Osborne College of Technology and Science.  He took a deep breath and tightened his grip on his bag, trying to push out the memories. But they didn’t go.

 

“Daddy! Daddy!” the little boy squealed, waving a blue ribbon in his hand. “Daddy, I won! I won regionals!”

The man choked on his water.

 

The little boy didn’t notice. “Daddy! It’s next week and Mommy says I’ll win!”

 

“What’s next week?” the man spat.

 

The little boy faltered for a moment. “States, Dad. The science fair for states.”

 

The man slammed his glass down on the table and glared. “You’re not going.”

 

“But-”

 

“I said you’re not going!” he roared.

 

The boy stood for a second, still, scared. Then he nodded. “Yes sir.”

 

Zeb tried not to remember any more – or at least not those memories. Everyone else was supportive. Why couldn’t their voices just drown out his dad’s?

 

He blinked, took a deep breath, and crossed the steel courtyard. His father was gone, but he wasn’t. And he was going to pursue his dream. He would solve problems and save lives. This wasn’t about his father. This was about the world.
