I’m pretty sure I’m from ____ region, but I’m not sure and even if I did know, I’m not too comfortable sharing my location. 🙂
Mock Trial… well… let me try to summarize:
As a team we get a case, either criminal or civil, and for a couple months, we prepare to present it and go against another mock trial team. Some teammates get the role of acting as witness in the trial and write their directs and prepare for crosses. Some witnesses can be emotional, such as the daughter of the man murdered, or others we like to play as nerds or add accents. Others are experts and testify to crime scene investigation and what their conclusions from it are.
Other teammates get the role of an attorney, and have to memorize case law, state law, objections, write directs and crosses and openings/closings, or, like me, you might get both a lawyer and a witness.
As a team however, we are not assigned either to present prosecution or defense, but we have to prepare for both.
After a couple months of preparations, practices, scrimmages, etc., we then go to tournaments. They can last from one day with one or two rounds, to three days with many rounds. If you win regionals, then you go to states, if you win states, you go to nationals, if you win nationals… well you get bragging rights and usually scholarships to colleges. 😉
There are also invitational tournaments that include international teams that all come together for a weekend to compete at a college. It’s so much fun!
Anyways, that’s an overview. I hope it made sense and if you want any clarifying questions just ask me. 🙂
What speeches have you done in the past for NCFCA?
