Here’s some more! I’m going with the whole light/darkness vibe from my prompt, the vision/dream that the rest of you suggested, and the sacrificial King theme that @steward-of-the-pen came up with. 😉

The Kingdom was going to pieces. The only shred of normality that he had left was his Capital, his son intent on wrenching the Kingdom from his worn and tired fists.

He wanted to hold on, wanted to come out victorious, but that would take something worth more than this World.

Something that only he could give.

And so he dreamt again, losing himself in the annals of his mind only to find himself again when the dawn broke and the sun kissed his brow like a mother encouraging a child.

But first, he slept.

At first he saw nothing behind those paper-thin eyelids that closed in reckless abandon, nothing but darkness and the quiet, synthetic whispers of peace that he knew were not meant for him.

He reached forward, feeling the wisps caress his fingers with all subtlety involved. They touched his arms, his chest, ran bony fingers across the stubble on his jaw–but then, ah, then they touched his crown.

He flinched.

And so it began.
