Julian stopped and turned around. He looked into her eyes and frowned, “you know, you aren’t the only one with a rough past.” He said quietly, but firm, “but sometimes, you just have to stop thinking about yourself and focus on what’s happening right now.”

Ellie let go of Kallun’s arm and placed her hand on Pia’s shoulder.

Julian continued, “Look, people are dying and if they have survived, they’re left with nothing. My mother was killed and my home was destroyed. I don’t want more peopleto have to deal with that.”

He paused for a moment to decide if he should continue. He didn’t like being so serious, but he needed to say this.

“I tease, ok? I’m sorry it reminds you of your past, but that’s what I do. It’s how I am. If you’re going to cry over every little word I say, you can leave. I don’t even know you, so it’s impossible for me to know to not say something.”

He looked at Kallun, “I had to make that choice with him, you’ll just have to do the same for me.”
