“I …” Ruan paused and tried again. “I’m sorry if I startled you. I was … thinking.”

Quin nodded.

“You … you’re not an assassin, are you?” Rúan asked doubtfully.

Quin smirked. “I sure hope not.” One death was enough. His smile faded. What about you? He pushed the thought aside. “How’s…how’s your leg?”

It was harder to get the words out than he thought it would be, and he avoided looking at the bandage and the blood. It was all so familiar. “Not too…too bad, I hope.” He didn’t know if he was talking to Ruan or himself, and mumbled to a stop.
