Personally, I think that Mara had past trauma and Brennan got mixed up in it. Not wanting her to think it was her fault, he told her that he loved her, almost immediately.

I want to think that brennan got mixed into drug trade that mara was addicted to and he promised to be the go-between for the cops, then it went wrong, but that’s just my theory. It could be anything.
