as Damian pounded on the door, Doctor Jefe calmly hovered over me. He waved over a nurse, who gave him an IV filled with a sparkly purple liquid. He tapped it into my neck, and took a frond of my hair in his hand.

“Oh how beautiful you will be with this hair-extending DNA from a younger girl on Level Seventeen,” he said, a creepy edge to his voice. Dr. Jefe stopped, then tugged on the feathers on my ears. “No, no, no, no, this will not do! You’re supposed to be normal! Tsk, tsk. Nurse Goldie? Yes, the tweezers. Thank you”

My eyes widened and I tried to jerk away, but the IV in my neck made me feel as if my joints needed an oil. my bones were creaky and it was easy for Dr Jefe to start plucking the downy feathers from my ears. I yelped at every pluck, and the pounding at the door strengthened.

Doctor Jefe chuckled at the door and waved for an orderly in the corner to open it. Damian stumbled through, and immediately locked eyes on Aria.

“Aria!” he called and started towards me, but the orderlies caught his arms and restrained him. Doctor Jefe tsked and smiled at my rapidly growing hair, but frowned at the feathers on my ears that had grown back just as quickly. He pulled the IV out.

“You, my little bird, are ready,” he said, pushing yet another syringe into my vein and shooting something potent into my bloodstream. I blinked.

The world was becoming fuzzy. the restraints at my hands and feet were unbuckled, but I didn’t want to move. I was so calm that when an orderly put me by the wall next to Damian, I simply played with my hair, which was past my knees now.

Dr. Jefe turned to Damian and looked him over, “You won’t need much, maybe a clean shave, but you weren’t as scruffy as she.”

Damian’s eyes filled with rage as Doctor Jefe smiled at me, “Now, she is perfect. That IV I put in her should clear up that awful skin tone, and look at that hair.”

the man placed his hands on my shoulders, but I didn’t fight back. I didn’t even gag when I looked into his face. All of that would be useless, right?
