Yeah, the resemblance is hard to catch even after you know who it’s supposed to be. (I’ve seen the movie multiple times but didn’t notice it was Luke’s face until my dad pointed it out. XD )
Oh, and speaking of Luke…I think the climax’s focus between Kylo Ren and Luke is supposed to be drawing from the subplot surrounding the destruction of Luke’s Jedi temple. However, I also think other elements besides the showdown were supposed to add to the tension (the desperate escape of the Resistance, for example).

It does sound like the phrase refers to the new ideas; I couldn’t say for certain, though. I will say that the one new element that I do consider a “betrayal of the franchise” is the films’ emphasis on balance in the Force. The original trilogy clearly portrays the dark side as evil and weaker than the “good” side, and while the prequel trilogy does bring up the idea of balance, I think the Jedi interpreted this concept as the destruction of evil. However, these new films (The Last Jedi in particular) seem to imply that the dark side is a natural and perhaps even an essential counterbalance to the light. Of course, Star Wars has never been fundamentally Christian, but this shift in how evil is treated worries me about where IX might end up philosophically.
(I haven’t seen the Solo film, but I heard that it didn’t do too well at the box office.)

Despite its resemblance to A New Hope, I agree that The Force Awakens is better than VIII.
What part of The Last Jedi disappointed you the most?
