@azeline-d I really like the snippet you wrote about the leaf! The description and word choices are just lovely. And the girl in the snippet reminds me of myself, strangely enough. xD I think the French would be “vous êtes belle, érable.”

@steward-of-the-pen I love the idea of focusing on a grandmother’s hands and her sacrificial service. I’m just wondering whether it would seem too disjointed with all the different scenes. We’ve done entries similar to that (the happy ending one, for instance) and the judges thought the story was too rushed. We’ll have to avoid that. Perhaps we could write it from the granddaughter’s point of view as she is with her grandmother in the hospital just reminiscing and looking at her hands. That way we can incorporate the memories a bit better. (The winning entry of last year’s story contest did something like that.)

This reminds me of a story I read a long time ago about a little girl and her mother. The mother’s hands were scarred and deformed, and as her daughter grew up, she noticed how different her mother’s hands were from the hands of her friends’ mothers. When she asked why, the mother explained that when the girl was little, there was a house fire. She rushed to save her baby and her hands were burned in the process. When the little girl heard the story, she smiled and said that the hands were beautiful.
