Klein stood. He just couldn’t seem to start or join a conversation. He got along fine with his squad and a few officers. Few others really talked much outside of the usual debrief questions. Maybe it had something to do with how boot camp was? Before Klein could continue the thought, the ground under his foot cracked loudly. Springing toward safe ground, he realized his error. Instead of jumping, all he did was concentrate his weight on the crack. More than five hundred pounds of armor and man broke through the ground.
Crashing against the rubble, Klein blinked. That wasn’t too… His helmet slammed into his forehead. Shaking the ringing out of his ears, Klein picked up the helmet. Touching his head with his free hand, he felt the burning pain. That would bruise up a bit. Twisting helm on, the HUD lit up. No chances of that happening again. Looking up, Klein saw the hole he had made. Not too large, maybe four feet across and eight feet down to the floor.
“I’m okay. Just landed on my head.”
Not a good joke but… Klein kicked at the dust on the smooth floor. Smooth floor. Not natural. Curious, Klein felt the wall. Also smooth. Carved and polished.
“Hey, y’all gotta see this.”
Klein saw what it was now. A passageway, high arched almost Gothic in shape. In the distance, a grey light shown. Instinct quickly moved him to his rifle. It wasn’t damaged in the fall thankfully. Now armed, Klein advanced. The others found a way down and followed. Watching his HUD, Klein saw the carbon dioxide levels rise slightly. Nothing dangerous but interesting.
A form on the ground caught his attention next. Raising his hand in warning, Klein kneeled cautiously. He had an idea what it was but flicked on the helmet light for final confirmation. It was a body, a week or so old. A dwarf too, armored and armed. Klein was glad to have his helmet. This one would be pretty bad by now. Brushing maggots aside, Klein took the dwarf’s weapon. A war hammer with a steel rather than wood shaft. Holding it against his back, he let the magnets grip it. The hammer would be a good melee weapon if he needed on. It was more of a hand axe in length but the all metal construction could keep up with his greater strength.
Motioning with his hand, Klein took up point again. The end of the passage was near.
All right folks, here’s the scenario. They are basically in the Lonely Mountain. At the end of the passage in the great hall and of course a sleeping dragon. That catch is, there is a captive there too. Freeing said captive will wake the dragon. So what do they do.
@everyone.
