“I used to have extra fast reflexes, but I seem to be losing that ability,” he replied, stiffly.

I tilted my head, suspiciously. That wasn’t the reaction of someone who had been lying. I knew lies and that wasn’t one.

A soft, whispery voice interrupted my thoughts. It was singing, distantly, fading in and out of earshot. It sounded like Faye, but the song was one of those Kongar used to sing. She didn’t know it.

I shook my head, trying to shake off the hallucination. It might be the tension of the converastion that had brought it on.

Khalon was looking at me strangely and I crossed my arms, trying to hide my apprehensive reaction to what probably appeared to be nothing.

“I’m sorry. It must be hard to lose an ability like that,” I said, more sympathetically this time.

I knew what that felt like. It was probably the same uneasy fear that had taken hold of me when the movement in my hand had started to go. The terror that it wouldn’t come back. Mine never had. I hoped his did.
