Khalon has cultivated the talent of knowing when to be quiet from the time spent with Cahira, my obliviously arrogant, emotional- and mental-wreck of a character. Had he not cultivated that talent, he would have been dead or at least an outcast.
It’s an important skill XD Aydin is one of my few characters who has it, he’s used to literally everyone around him being very emotionally unstable. I think he’ll really like Khalon!
Aydin
“I’m Khalon,” The man answered, briefly.
I looked at him dubiously. Was he mad or was he just quiet? Was he upset with me or the whole situation? I instinctively tensed, then realized I was doing it and forced myself to hide it. Why was talking to people so irrationally exhausting?
I wasn’t about to talk but he did.
“Where are you from and what do you do for a living?”
He had somehow managed to choose the most loaded questions available. I blinked, trying to formulate an answer that didn’t include telling him I had murdered people for a living. He might not take well to that.
He picked up on my unease and said,
“You don’t have to answer that if you don’t want to, but anyway, I’m from Cilce and I’m a student at one of its academies.”
I raised my eyebrows, surprised. Yerasht had excellent universities and academies but getting in was difficult and a lot of work, something most people didn’t have time for. Most of us had to work for a living. That hadn’t really applied to me but it had never been an option either way.
“Really?” I asked, unable to hide my surprise. “Tell me about it.” I sounded more wistful than interested but I was both. I would have loved to go. There were so many things I wish I could have studied. I never really thought about it, what was the use? I’d never get to go now, anything I wanted to know I’d had to teach myself.
I realized I still hadn’t answered his question and sighed.
“I’m from the south of Yerasht and I’m the crown prince of one of the tribes, can’t you tell?”
I grinned bitterly, knowing he’d pick up on the sarcasm. I was the furthest removed from royalty as anyone could ever be. He smiled and I corrected myself.
“I’m actually– not doing anything right now,” I said, rather shyly.
He’d probably seen my paralyzed hand by this time. I had never heard of the place he was from, but he might recognize the torn edge of my cloak, marking me as tribeless. [essentially outlawed]

Huh, I never actually knew Aydin would have wanted to study something. I technically knew he was pretty academically competent, (he taught himself everything about the poisons) but it never occured to me that maybe he had other plans than joining the Siya.
