  • Wait, I am tardy again? Anyhow, this is the opening scene from (one of) my novels that I am currently working on. Although, I wrote this years ago and my style may have changed slightly. I still think it’s fun.

    “Hey, wait up, genius!”

Lisa looked behind her and immediately wished she hadn’t. It was that jerk, Karl.

Before he transferred, she could stay invisible in class— the way she preferred best. Enough spotlight was shone on her from skipping grades back when she was a fourth grader, and she was kind of tired being bullied.

“Just shut your big mouth, Schurke.” Lisa let the locker slam. A pitiful pencil got stuck in between, making the locker look like a robot who tried to eat diamonds and lost all but one tooth.

“Aw, come on! Just let me copy your homework.” Karl flashed her one of his it’s-not-a-big-deal smile that the entire tenth-grade girls (who were totally stupid, in Lisa’s opinion) were dying to get. Sure, his emerald-green eyes were sort of intimidating, but Lisa knew how much of a conceited brat he was.

“Why don’t you use your grey matters? You’re supposed to be gifted or something.” Lisa shot him a wolf stare. Karl responded with his (supposedly) cool laugh. Being dimly aware of a crowd assembling, she wished she had kept her mouth zipped and ignored him like any sensible person would have done. Carefully she edged her way through a gap in the semicircle of students, hoping against all odds to escape the scene.

“Oh, I’m afraid you won’t be getting away that way.” A voice behind her back shoved her back to the centre. Darn it. How could she forget about Karl’s obnoxious bodyguard, Jonah? Even some of the teachers were afraid of him, but he was only a dull-witted thug.

Scowling, Lisa snarled, “Get off my back, Jonah.” Then turning to Karl, she roughly shoved the wad of paper in his face. “Here. I hope Ms Dive would give you an F.” And this will be the last time you’d want to mess with me, she silently warned.

“I knew you were smart,” Karl grinned as if that was the end of discussion. But as he tried to snatch the bundle out of her hand, she gave him a light one-inch-push, flexing her hand out.

Instantly Karl flew back and lay there sprawled on the floor, shock written all over his face. A gasp escaped from the crowd.

“I only pushed him,” Lisa offered innocently as she disappeared into the crowding students. But when she bumped into the unsmiling face of the bald principal, she knew she was in trouble.  A big one.

“ Miss Johnson, we seem to have an issue here.”
