(finally got around to writing down some thoughts :). Tolkien’s use of mystery to keep readers reading stood out to me the most. 🙂 With omni POV he has the option of revealing a lot of information to readers, but he’s selective. He keeps the dwarfs a mystery for a pretty long time, keeping us in the dark just like Bilbo (unless you’ve read the book or seen the movies XD).
I also love Bilbo’s priorities. The horror of going without food for his guests and his need for handkerchiefs make him seem more real. I also love the snippets of Tookishness that comes through in places, showing readers who he could become. 🙂
1. I wasn’t paying attention to that part. I’ll have to consider it as I move on. 🙂
3. I love Tolkien’s voice too. It feels like I’m sitting by a fire listening to him tell the story 🙂 It has some subtle snark to it as well. 😛
