Awesome topic! I’m reading through it for recommendations XD

Here are my favorites:

I second Ranger’s apprentice, Brotherband, and the Royal Ranger by John Flanagan. It’s pretty awesome! The only thing I dislike are the female characters, who are kinda flat, but it doesn’t really detract from the overall story, which is awesome! My favorite characters are Halt (especially in the earlier books), Will, and Tug. (Yes, the horse counts)

The Ascendence series by Jennifer A. Nielsen. Amazing characters and great plot twists. Writing and pacing good. There’s some violence, but it isn’t graphic. My favorite character is Sage, definitely. He has one of the best character voices I’ve ever read.

The Scourge, by Jennifer A. Nielsen. Really interesting world, not set in the middle ages, for once. I really liked the characters and the plot was good too!

The Letter for the King and Secrets of the Wild Wood, by Tonke Dragt. Excellent book, really good translation actually.

Don’t dismiss this if you’ve seen the Netflix series. As far as I’ve seen, Netflix completely changed the plot, characters, backstory, and everything else. Both books are amazing, though Secrets of the Wild Wood has some more fascinating characters. My favorite characters are Isadoro, Lavinia, Prince Viridian, Piak, and Tiuri. Mild violence, but much less than average for a fantasy book.
