Vulferym turned his gaze to the youth who now addressed him. There was barely-hidden fear in his eyes, yet also a quiet determination of some sort. They stared at each other, both thinking hard.

“Your conscience knows what you did the in the dark.” the youth said, voice dropping in volume. He turned. “I’m going to check the mirrors to see if any of them are false or had trapdoors behind them, with your permission…Commander sir?”

Vulferym smiled. “By all means, you may. Don’t let me, the ignominious liar, keep you. But come, let us understand one another. I have merely stated what I know of your situation, introduced myself, and mentioned my uncle.”

Vulferym willed gentleness and soothing into his tone, and continued, “As far as I can see, you are a guest in his castle, which I am overseeing at the moment, and therefore you are my guest. You step up bravely, accusing me of lies. For what purpose, young one? To what avail?”

The lad’s back stiffened.

Btw, I love everyone’s scenes! I’ve been laughing out loud at y’all’s characters’ thoughts about Vulferym XD Especially Nithel, figuring out what the names mean lol.
