I’ve had a similar experience. I had a book that I began writing four or five years ago, and worked through it for around three years. I got my first rough draft done and began rewriting, but I had to drop it. It was also a “decent” story. I still go back to it and I totally love my characters (because they’re like your children, basically), yet I know I made the right choice in moving on.

On the other hand, I have a novel that I am working to finish in a few weeks that has been taking forever, this one also close to three years. The only reason I kept writing was that I knew I had the story (which had to go out or else suffer for it), and the ideas never stopped. It’s been taking me a while because I detoured on side book projects (which is a good thing to try out if your main ideas are stalling), and I really went into world-building. I have the rough outline planned out for the trilogy, and I hope I can share this soon!

So I guess I agree with what both @h-jones and @jane-maree is saying. For some stories, it may not work out the way you hoped it would. For some, it just takes time. The important thing is to be able to distinguish between these two. Sounds easy, right? 😛
