Amber doesn’t have much of a backstory. Her life was boring and “perfect”, and only recently has she learned that there was a lot more going on than she thought, and a lot of it was kept from her because her foster mother didn’t want her to be the Ember-girl. As a result, she is hesitant to trust anyone and often tries to stay aloof and distant to the point of being rude. Brendan was brought up under a strict scholar, and is afraid to mess up and even more afraid to voice his opinion. As a result, he becomes rather arrogant and know-it-all-ish when paired with Amber, who knows nothing about Leifer while he has studied it his whole life.
