@eden-anderson Okay. ^-^ I think it’s short enough to put in a post?

The forest was quiet today. The breeze gently tossed the leaves here and there like ghosts whispering in Will’s ears. He wondered if Ami was friends with those ghosts.

Of course she was. She was Ami.

He looked over at her, walking just in front of him, playing music on her phone and humming softly. She jumped gracefully over tree roots and bowed with water-like ease under low hanging branches. Will held one over his head to watch her dance to the music she held in her hand, the needles tickling his wrists.

She was so pretty when she was happy, when she leapt over roots and spun to crescendos on rocks with that sunshine smile on her face. He wondered how she ever felt at home in town, if she ever felt stifled when she had to walk. Maybe that’s why she spent so much time here. There was no one here to call her a freak, no one to say she should be quiet. She could sing her crystal notes with perfect clarity and no one could tell her to stop. No one could tell her what to do in this fantasy land of moss-covered ground and sunlight streaming through the trees and falling across her wispy hair and freckled face.

I saw a ghost on the stairs,

And sheets on the tables and chairs…

”I love this song!” Ami grinned as she leapt over to where Will was leaning against a rock and took his hand.

Owl City, as he might have suspected.

”Come on, Will. Dance with me.”

He shook his head, shifting to his feet. ”But I’m so bad at it.”

”I know. That’s why I’m going to teach you.” She tugged on his hand with all her might, digging her heels into the dirt.

Will let her pull him to his feet, and she hugged him tightly, but quickly, before taking his hands and pulling him into the center of the small clearing.

”Okay, now, take my hand, there, and put your other hand on my waist.”

He awkwardly did as he was told.

”Okay, now, follow my steps. Forward, right, back, left. One, two three four. One, two…”

Will laughed internally. This little creature was teaching him how to waltz. He didn’t know what was more embarrassing, the amount of times he stepped on her feet, or that he was actually getting good at it.

”See, Will? You’re not so bad. Try and spin me.”

He did, and her hair and her overall-like skirt flared gently. This was like a fairy tale, he thought. Ami was a princess and he was the awkward apothecarian she brought to her ball amongst the trees.

”Okay, I think you got it. Let me replay the song.” He heard her giggle softly, as she returned to him and took his hand. ”I’ve wanted to do this since I first heard this song.” She looked a little paler than she had, but maybe just one more song?

    And they danced.

I’d rather waltz than just walk through the forest,

The trees keep the tempo when they sway in time….

He spun her again, more boldly this time. It was even better than before, the grin on her face even wider.

She tripped over a tree root, falling to her knees.

”Oh, dang it.” Will cursed softly, ”Ami, are you all right?”

What he expected was a muffled. ”I’m fine,” or even an exasperated, ”It’s okay, we’ll try it again.”

What he got was no response. Ami lie there in the dirt and wasn’t moving.

    ”Ami? Ami?!”

If I were to pluck on your heartstrings would you strum on… mine?

Anyway, so, that’s the scene. It, ah, doesn’t end happy does it? *pokes it* I promise the story itself does though. ;D Whoops.
