TOLKIEN AND LORD OF THE RINGS YAAASSSS!!!!!
I once heard that Eowyn’s arc was about war. Tolkien fought in WWII and that generation was a realization that war wasn’t the glorified stories they had all been told.
From what I can remember from my mix of reading the books forever ago and seeing the movies, at the beginning of her arc she is all like “I want to be a warrior for honor and glory and to protect my people.” When people tell her to stay behind, she is like “You are just saying that because I am a girl!”. I’m sure that was part of it, but I think it was also “War sucks, and I’m like 95% sure we are going to die out here and I don’t want you to be part of that.” (Seriously, at the beginning of every battle the leaders look at each other and are like “You know we are totally going to lose and all die, right?” “Yes, but we will do it anyway.”)
The heroes of Middle Earth were the ones that fought for peace. (“But I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend”) When Eowyn faces battle for the first time she realizes that there is no glory in war and sets down her sword.
