Oof… I’m sorry, I don’t believe I can help here, as those two fields are outside what I usually work in. Unless by contemporary you mean contemporarily written. To which I would point at N.D. Wilsons’s Boys of Blur, 100 Cupboards, Ashtown Burrials, Leepike Ridge, and Outlaws of Time. All of those are adventure fiction, but each has one form of fantasy or another. It’s so beautifully woven in that it might be worth read your time… but I’d start with Leepike Ridge, as it has no fantasy involved.
As far as adventure goes, by other authors… I know fantasy stories… I mean, Ender’s Game… it’s science fiction. And I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for either. Hmm… *searches through the archives of his mind, looking for books he got at the library…* AH!
Okay, I’d look into Zach’s Lie. It’s by Roland Smith. In fact, it’s two books series (think). IQ (same author) is fun, especially the first two books. After that it gets a bit more wacko, even though it starts out a bit wack.
The Lightning Thief is adventure, but it’s also fantasy.
Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is a realistic adventure story.
So yeah… I don’t know if any of that was helpful. Most the books I mentioned are helpful if one is looking at writing adventure with a slight fantasy twist… and I would argue they might even be helpful if you’re not looking at fantasy, because of how they lay out the adventure. But I do understand if it’s not what you’re looking for.
Now, I shall call upon @scribbles, as historical fiction is a favorite of hers. And I wanna say it is for @eden-anderson and maybe @corkybookworm? Oh! Also ask Gracie (Livingston) on both of these subjects… she’s really busy right now, but if she has a chance to answer she’ll probably have some good answers. And Rolena (Hatfield), now that I think of it.
