I wrote this short story the other day, about how Snow White’s prince was literally kissing a corpse and how that’s a very strange thing to do, and my dad told me, “You like writing the stories that almost were.” That pretty much exactly describes how I get most of my story ideas. What is this story had this twist instead of that one? What if the character acted like how I would in this situation? (Or at least how I would like to think I would act.) What if Gandalf discovered Biblo had the ring earlier and did something about it before it became a we-need-to-destroy-the-ring-now-or-we-will-be-invaded-next-week? What would it be like to be a random soldier in a generations-long war against the Forces of Darkness and Doom? That’s one of the reasons why I have a lot of retold fairytales in my head. I like writing the stories that almost were, so I normally get my inspiration from other stories.

Also, talking to writing friends about writing is my favorite part of writing. It’s usually pretty productive too.
