I haven’t read the series in years, so this response won’t be a five-point-essay analysis of what makes it good (xD), but I think what drew me into them was Percy himself. The snark in his narration is one that Riordan reuses for most of the PoVs I’ve read from him, but none of them sell me on it the way Percy did (does? I have read the follow-up series, Heroes of Olympus, more recently [which I don’t necessarily recommend], and I still prefer Percy’s PoV even though it’s in third person there).

In Percy Jackson and the Olympians, he’s a good kid who made for a great introduction to the crazy, messed-up, Greek-gods-are-real world. He stays humble even as he picks fights against bullies (his peers OR gods that could blast him into ash with a wave of a hand), and he stays loyal even when, say, he’s angsting about the discrimination his friends show against his half-brother and, by extension, him.
