The main thing I’ve learned about beta reading is to make sure I have time before agreeing to help, especially here at Story Embers. I’m head of a small private group of 15 writers and so they’re my top priority, and I’ve final made a rule that I just don’t have the time to beta read anything here, unless it’s in my guild, then I’ll try to squeeze in some time. I have ended up beta reading so much in the past year for that group of writers and its really helped me grow in the sense of (like Daeus said) sitting there and figuring out why the scene didn’t feel right or what is going wrong. I’ve also been able to begin the process of being able to voice thoughts on plots and character clearer and realize things I had known subconsciously. And this has all helped my personal journey as a writer too.
