I wrote a book when I was a lot younger (I’m talking 7 or 8), and I re-edited it to make sure there were no ‘said’s in it, and then I learned that said is virtually pass-over-able. When I read, I never notice when the characters ‘said’ in their conversations, but I notice it a lot when authors put ‘ “Oh, hello,” she blustered. ‘ or something of the sorts, and it pulls me out of the book and into real life. I definitely tend to use tags such as ‘ “Oh hello.” She fiddled with her purse.’ or something like that. It’s not very often that I actually use the word ‘said’, but I still like to know it’s out there to use if I want.
