Oh boy. The struggle is real.
Well, I have one character in my main WIP who is Italian, and one who is south Asian. I’ve mostly struggled with Bibek (the south Asian one) because there are so many layers to India’s languages. Seemingly endless merges, depending on the area and such. It’s been difficult to portray his speech patterns correctly and I need to narrow it down sooner rather then later, since the story mainly takes place in Southern India.
Tony, (the Italian, I’m sure you’re shocked at the name choice…I was 13 when I named him, to late to change it lol) is a little less hard to reach. But even then, I find it tricky to think of how he may structure his sentences differently then someone who’s first language is English.
Both cases require even more research then I’ve already put into them, but I’m convinced it will be worth it!
Language really is fascinating. What a great topic, and an even better story tool.
