@karthmin *clears throat* Well, the external goal of my WIP is to force the Short One off world where he can’t complete his world-domination plans. (It’s portals fantasy.) To do that they need to travel to his stronghold, sneak into it, and complete a ritual only the MC can do. (Well, she isn’t the only one who can do it, but she was the only one willing to try.) That is the external goal.

The thing the MC learns over the course of the story is that you don’t need traditionally heroic qualities to be a hero. She is not especially clever, brave, or physically fit. The others constantly have to work around the fact that she can’t scale a wall, for instance. The Dark Moment of Doom comes when she freezes at the wrong moment, everyone gets captured so she can get away, and she loses the only thing that would let them beat the Short One. (It’s actually not, but she thinks it is.)

Yet she somehow keeps finding herself the only person who can save them at important moments, and at the climax Aliyah realizes that maybe the most important thing about being a hero is that they try. And she can try.
