Wow, I actually haven’t read any of those. I don’t have a library right now, otherwise I would look those up. 🙂 The ones I own are the Lamplighter by Maria S. Cummins which is still my favorite so far, The Hidden Hand, Ismael or in the Depths, and the sequel Self Raised. How did you first hear about the Lamplighter series? I actually just stumbled onto one of their audio book snippets and then started looking at their books.
Missionary stories always challenge my faith and make it stronger, it’s been too long since I read one of those. 🙂 It’s not a missionary story, but have you ever read the Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom?
Yes, the Father Brown series is his most well known work. 🙂 But he made his living writing articles for a paper I think, I’ve found a lot of the articles very relevant and I highly recommend them. While being a colorful but very Christian character he manages to make thought provoking points. Besides his articles and the Father Brown series, he’s written several stand alone works such as the Ball and the Cross, Man Alive, and the Man who was Thursday. But if you’ve ever heard of a movie with the same title as the Man who was Thursday, run from it, it’s a twisted version of the book and not at all what he wrote. As far as christian writers go, I think he’s fantastic. 🙂 So there are articles and Father Brown stories if you want light reading, and some of his stand alone books if you’re more interested in those. And there are even some well read audio books of his works on youtube that I can recommend. 🙂
Thank you for your encouragement about my publishing, but I still need to take down and rewrite that story. Ugh, it wasn’t as ready as I thought it was. I have started the rewriting process but it’s still very much in the rough draft stage. I might post some of it on here and ask for a critique again in the future when I have something decent to show people.
Thank you, I have found that to be the best goal I can have to improve my writing. I find there are occasionally surprising helpful things that pop up. Occasionally it’s a free webinar about writing, or helpful articles on story embers, but I have to keep my eyes open and be willing to pounce on the opportunities when I see them, because I never know how long they’ll be there. And unlike some writers, because I’m a stay at home wife I don’t feel right spending money on writing courses. Got nothing against it, I simply can’t justify spending that much money to myself, which means I can’t justify it to my husband. He’s great and wouldn’t mind me spending the money on it if I asked him, but I can’t bring myself to do it. 🙂 So I hunt down books about writing that I don’t have to spend money on, articles, and writer’s websites, and keep my eyes open for anything else that comes my way.
What about you? 🙂 Are there any special ways you work at improving your writing?
