Hi Taylor (@taylorclogston),
To your point…
Hopefully your reader is charitable and not too annoyed by whatever particular flaw it is. On the other hand, in a specific situation like this, it would need to be blatantly obvious to me that this was a “flaw,” because one of the tropes of Christian fiction is that this trait is a positive virtue rather than a flaw. If I thought a character was going to spend the whole story piously spewing Scripture while the world constantly rejects and shuns them for it, I’d think the author just had a victim complex. Which is usually the case with characters like this.…If a particular story is by design, not intended for non-believers, do you think that makes a difference?
Imagine for a moment, that you found yourself in an alternate reality, where your very survival depended on your present knowledge and recall of Scripture. How long could you survive?
When Jesus contended with Satan in the desert after His 40 day fast, He countered Satan’s every ploy with “It is written…”
Clearly, the Scriptures have power to both transform lives and combat deception…
“15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. ” [2 Timothy 3:15-17]Notice the audience “so that the man of God” [inclusive term including women as well].
If we are called into battle the unseen, what weapons are not carnal to be effective against them? Look at what Jesus used, by saying “It is written…” when He was The Word incarnate.
If the apostasy of our age is characterized by forms of godliness, deceptions and turning away from sound doctrine, isn’t it essential then that we the called and set-apart have an appreciation for the Scriptures and become empowered by personal relationship and fellowship with our Savior?
just to be clear my specific story I am referring to is not for the lost world. I can do that differently if I am writing for all audiences rather than a targeted few. This particular story, not to put too fine a point on it, will offend a pagan or one who seeks friendship with the world as James 4:4 explains.
I am not advocating for a Scripture machine gun to whack and drop a demon or two, but a thoughtful application of Scripture relevant to a specific scenario is something quite different than that.
Going back to Jesus’s temptation as a model. You fight a lie with uncompromised truth. Context matters. Satan spouted Scripture without context in an effort to deceive.
