Zuko is a villain/redeemed villain in an animated Nickelodeon show who is one of my most loved characters of all time. It’s called Avatar: The Last Airbender and you should totally watch it. XD
Anyhow…. I personally didn’t like Voldemort very much. He just never hit it off to me as a great villain. He’s by no means a bad villain, I just didn’t like him very much. Sure, he has motivations and his story is sad…. but other than that, I just never liked him….
I don’t know. He just wasn’t amazing, from my point of veiw.
But I totally agree with you that not all villains, or even most villains, should have a redemption arc. I have multiple villains, but only one has an actual redemption arc. Sure, I still love the other ones, and wish I could redeem them, but it just doesn’t work out. Not all villains can or should be redeemed.
And as much as I love Tolkien, I has to agree with you on the orc thing. I have not read the Simarillion(okay, I tried, and failed.) or any of his works other than the LOTR series and The Hobbit, so I honestly have no clue if there’s some sort of super tragic backstory as to why all the orcs are just plain evil or not, but knowing Tolkien, there’s probably something somewhere. However, that was one of my major complaints about the series. And any series that uses a generic “evil” race, really. I’ve yet to find a book that does it well.
Paolini is someone that I personally look up to very much, because he published Eragon at such a young age. Someday, I hope to do the same. His books are amazing, and I love them. They’re not my personal favorite books or styles of writing, but they are still amazing for a young author(or any fantasy author, really) to pull off.
However, like always, I have mixed opinions of his works. They are loooong(which there’s nothing wrong with that) and I feel like there’s quite a few parts or things that could have been written shorter, better, and clearer. However, I say that about every author, so… yeah. I’m also not a huge fan of his writing style–I don’t know why, I just never really liked it or got into it well.
I agree with your that some villains are not meant to be redeemed–most shouldn’t be–but I love villains who get a chance to be redeemed and then scorn it, for good reasons. Voldemort…. he was just sort of this looming character for me who never really got involved on a personal level until the end. I liked villains like the insufferable Umbridge, Bellatrix, and even Draco(who, technically, wasn’t a villain, but I loved him all the same because he reminded me of what could have happened–how someone can and will turn into a villain so easily, and also how someone else in the same situation can stay “good”.).
Then again, this is all just my personal preference. XD I like villains who will not be redeemed because they don’t want to be–but I also like making a villain reform when no one else wants him to. Like, how many books have we read where the hero and the villain have a nice chat because #herobelievesthere’sgoodineveryone and the villain comes out and changed man and is welcomed into the group with open arms?
Just.
No.
That is not how it works. Yuck. That man was literally just trying to kill you, and you’re making sugar cookies with him now. Two days later.
Just–please don’t.
