Yess, the most epic Karthmin is here!
*waves awkwardly in return*
Welcome, fellow introvert. I happen to be the most amazing and fabulous INTJ, and I hereby anoint you a member of this thread. *fancy hand gesture*
*muffled laughter*
Okay, okay, I know you don’t like large tomes… but you do realize you have the longest forum comments ever, only seconded by myself when I’m on a roll? XD Fortunately, I have faith that if you do write a tome, it will be most epic and amazing. 😉
And I totally agree that we should try to say more with less. If you know what I mean. *wink*
Redemption arcs, when done well, are amazing. Like one of my favorite tropes ever. They are just soooooo amazing when they’re done well. Like, by show of hands–who thinks that Zuko is (*cough* was)a better villain than Voldemort?? (Answer: It’s Zuko.)
I’m not trying to bash on Rowling, but honestly, I’d pick Zuko as a villain over Voldemort any day. (Even though his hair in the first season was terrible. Eeh. I don’t like the pony tails on the guys, kay? Especially not the rest of your noggin is bald as bald can be.) Zuko was compelling. Interesting. Sure, I’m not going to give ATLA an Oscar, but I think that in the manner of handling complex themes, it did waaaay better than HP in some ways. (But hey, at least my boy Draco got… sort of a redemption arc? Like, kind of half-way?) I still love Harry Potter, but honestly, I’d pick the Y-7 Nick show over it in the manner of villains and addressing racism/stereotypes. (Also, if you think the HP fandom is great? Go look at the ATLA fandom. It’s still alive after all this time, guys. And there are some amazing writers on there, whom I personally look up to more than “real” writers often.)
That just kind of turned into an ATLA rant. But still. ATLA is amazing, who can deny it?
EVIL DRAGONS!! I love good dragons, and dragons riders from the depths of my soul…. (and Toothless is adorable, HTTYD 3 better not touch a hair… er, scale on his head.) but it’s become an insanely common trope anymore that dragons are so cool they must all be good guys. And first off, if dragons are intelligent enough to be good guys, they’re also intelligent enough to be bad guys also. Secondly, who says they all have to be good? Maybe some of them like using their power for evil. Maybe some just want to eat cake.
Cake is good. We all like cake.
*clears throat*
Anyhow, I want more evil dragons. (Hear that people? Write some evil dragons. I want some.) And while the image of dragon riders swooping down to save the day with fire and sword is epic…. evil dragons are still awesome. (Smaug is epic too, y’all.)
*grimaces*
Don’t even get me started on how much I generally hate the chosen one trope. Now, I’ve seen it done well… (at least…. I think I have?) …but when it’s done poorly or averagely… it’s just terrible. Bleh. Yuck. I hate it. ‘Nuff said.
Royalty is epic. Especially when I do it.
Okay, okay, it’s not always epic. But there’s something about creating a new culture, new social standards, expectations, formalities, languages, technicalities… that just appeals to me so much. Also, I love drawing my characters, and royal clothing is the BEST. It’s awesome. And fancy. And intricate. And cool.
Yeah. I like writing royal people. (Though I usually always write about princes… hmm, maybe Disney has made me prejudiced towards princesses. XD) They’re just so fun. Plus, I love having characters subtly insult each other with royal speech and formalities. It’s hilarious.
I only have one word to say about your statement regarding Marvel and DC–agreed.
#confession 02 for today–I actually liked the Hobbit when I watched it. Especially the first and second movies. The third one…. can we just pretend that one didn’t exist? I think I mostly liked them just for the animation and music. XD
Though that music is…. amazing.
(And Peter Jackson was definitely off his rocker.)
WHAT YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE LAST EPISODES OF ATLA THAT IS TERRIBLE GO WATCH THEM RN THEY ARE SO DARN AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING–
*cough*
Just go watch them.
And a personal recommendation from me? If you like epic, amazing world building that actually ties into the story(and you like Zuko, but who doesn’t), go read the amazing fanfic of ATLA called Embers by Vathara. I haven’t read any of their other fics, but Embers is literally one of the best things I’ve ever read. It’s like what ATLA would have looked like if Tolkien had written it, but hadn’t changed the story, only gone into it so. much. more.
It’s amazing. Go read it.
Thanks! I don’t want to replace the guilds, but I thought it would be fun to kind of have an all-around fantasy group where we can all help each other out. 😉
AND YESS. JUST–YES. People writing battle action by action irritates me so much. I hate it. Just—ugh. I have nothing nice to say about it. XD
