I want to be sure that I’m not sounding mean or angry or anything, because that is not at all what my attitude is. I am just very opinionated about this issue, and I am not ashamed of what I believe about it, but I want to make sure that I don’t sound like I’m being rude about it.
So, why do I believe that socialism is wrong? I’ve given a lot of answers to that, but as I mentioned earlier, the men who are credited with the ideas of socialism were evil, and history has proven it to be deadly over and over.
I want to address what you said about slavery very carefully. There are cultural things in the Bible that would be ridiculous to implement now, such as building a wall around your roof. However, when you think about it, why was there a wall there? To protect human life. People would spend time on the roof, and so that was a precaution. Nowadays we don’t spend much time on the roof (well, actually I have sat out on the roof to read The Silmarillion and look at the stars (or even more ridiculous things that I won’t mention here), but we can take that concept and apply it in other ways like building a fence around our swimming pools. Is this a matter of salvation? No! But it requires discernment. So, on the issue of slavery. Does the Bible make it clear that we are all made in the image of God? Yes, without a doubt. Before I say anything about slavery in the Bible, I’m going to also note that slavery in the Bible was also a different culture than what it was in American culture. I haven’t done a lot of research on it, but I do know that some people would sell themselves into slavery to earn money for a time, and when the time was up, they would go free. The Bible does not support the ownership of human life in the sense that human life is degraded. It does talk about slavery in Hebrew laws, but it is not a forever and ever ordeal. Slaves were to go free at the sixth or seventh year I believe. Then in the NT, it says that slaves should obey their masters, but that masters should treat their servants with kindness. This (in the culture if I am not mistaken) was more like in our day hiring. It was not the American plantation-style cruelty that people could first imagine. We hire a girl to help us in our house twice a week, but we treat her with the utmost respect. The Bible does not support any form of degrading of human life.
So, yes I agree that there are some things in the Bible that are to be understood within it’s culture, but it is also important to not put our understanding of culture upon history. Things that may sound horrible from our understanding of humanity have to be viewed from the angle of the day and time in which it happened, otherwise we will not truly understand it. That doesn’t make wrong right, but it is crucial to understanding correctly.
Then, to your last point, I am not convinced either way about society turning back to God, whether this tide will be turned or not. I do not say that I believe it will turn back to God, I pray it will, but I don’t expect it at this point unless something major happens. I do believe that the only way it will turn back to God is if we repent, get out of the mindset that we can create our own reality, and believe that God defines right and wrong. I believe that God’s word is perfect and holy, and that unless we heed it, our country will only get worse and worse until it comes apart at the seams and Christianity comes under persecution.
That is awesome. I think that is really amazing that you have that really early start, I commend you for that. 🙂
