@gabriellepollack I’m just jumping on here without reading anyone else’s answers, so…
I am not a huge fan of the Shire conflict just because I didn’t want it there, but I do appreciate for one reason. Because we need to remember that just because the main bad guy’s defeated doesn’t mean life is perfect now. I wrote a poem once called The End about how just because conflict is resolved doesn’t mean that we can all go back to our lovely lives.
‘The’ and ‘end’ are funny words
With the power they hold in our minds
They make us believe the fairy tales
And the story-telling’s are done
Do you ever think about what comes
In the blank pages after ‘The End’?
Lives don’t stop for two small words
They carry on and on
The hero brave, his sweetheart true
What happens after they marry?
The many families of soldiers dead
Their grief and sorrow must carry
The villain’s men, their master gone
Their purpose now is unclear
And those who fought must learn to live
While conquering lingering fear
These people have so much to do
Their word to keep, and homes rebuild
The broken hearts will start to heal
The empty lives be filled
And I believe that this is why
The extra paper remains
So it reminds us life goes on
In spite of the final page
So we’ll remember ‘The’ and ‘end’
Don’t mean the battle’s won
And just because the story’s over
Doesn’t mean the story’s done
