Béju’s growling suddenly escalated to a sharp, ferocious bark. He jumped against Rona’s hand, and nearly broke free of her grasp. His mouth opened wide, and he howled, then snapped his jaws and continued to bark, each one louder than the last.

The shadow moved again, then grew, two elongated shadows spreading from the sides of the main one.

Rona’s heart failed her, and her blood drained from her head. She stopped breathing.

“It’s—” Teena squinted, then her eyes widened, and she jumped up, turning to the crowd behind them. “A phoenix!” she screeched.

It was then that the giant bird took flight, diving straight for the clearing.
