@taylorclogston Okay, I see where you’re coming from.
You said:
As said in the opening post, these sorts of characters’ words have a direct impact on the plot and how other characters act, but the action itself is prompted by something that comes out of nowhere.
And I get that. I’ve also found it annoying when that happens, though in the instances we are talking about, there’s something that out ways that for me.
Gandalf:
As for Gandalf (I assumed we’re talking about the Hobbit, because he doesn’t really disappear in LOTR,) let’s take the troll example: Gandalf leaves, the trolls capture the dwarves and Bilbo, and then he appears again. That doesn’t bother me that much, because, if you read the timelines, you know he’s attending to business about the wizard council and the rising of the eye and Mordor and scouting out the area ahead, and I’m fine with Tolkien leaving that out, because it would slow down The Hobbit‘s plot and not contribute to it. Then, why he comes back, is because, as he says, he looked behind – which makes sense. It is a little too convenient, but I guess what makes the difference is that: this is your pet peeve not mine. 🙂
Peet the Sock Man:
Like you guys already said, at first he might seem like that kind of side character, but later he heavily contributes to the plot and you receive in the beginning of the second book (?) the revelation of his identity – which explains why he was there all along and why he was watching over the children.
Angela:
Now for Angela, she does never reveal her intentions. Or her background story. Or why she suddenly showed up at the other side of the world. 🙂
But that’s totally her character – mysterious, secretly, vague, but involved – and the mystery there really, as the reader, makes me want to read more and get more of this unexplained character so that I can try to piece her story together.
So, those are my thoughts. 🙂
@steward-of-the-pen @taylorclogston I’m interested to hear what you think!
