It’s interesting you bring up Gandalf, because as far as I can tell Tolkien did some retconning to make The Hobbit a prequel- that is, the ring became The One Ring (no seriously go look up the History of Middle Earth series to take a look at how Tolkien got to the finished work; it’s both fascinating and encouraging when even Mr. Tolkein had to discard some ideas). And yet, The Hobbit serves as a standalone novel on its own. Which I guess relates into a semi-related question that may or may not be within the topic of the discussion; what are ways to write a Standalone book that still has threads that could be picked up in a series? I’m planning on having the overall main character of my series act as the mentor for the protagonist of the WIP, and I’m hesitant on the OMC be in on the overarching goal of the bad guys at the start (partially due to reasons of scale, partially due to the fact that the bad guy’s true nature is unexpected for the setting; though I guess I should start foreshadowing it somehow).
